Title: Michael McDermott
Are Modal Beliefs Necessary?
In this paper I suggest a new route to a Humean decision theory.
The central idea of decision theory is that rational choice is
the joint product of (i) degrees of belief in certain conditional
propositions connecting possible actions with possible outcomes, and (ii)
the values attached to the outcomes. It is assumed that the degrees of
belief are subjective probabilities. It seems to follow that the kind of
conditional proposition required is an apparently non-Humean subjunctive
conditional. The usual way of trying to reconcile this with our Humean
metaphysical intuitions involves a subtle and complex analysis of the
required conditional, relying on an ontology of possible worlds. My
suggestion is that a simple material conditional may serve as the object of
belief, if we relax the assumption that the relevant degrees of belief obey
the laws of probability.
