Philosophy is not just some esoteric matter pursued by great minds. Great minds, yes. But these minds also want to relate what they think to the real world and everyday matters that touch all of us. Such is the topic for our July 23^rd Fourth Friday Philosophy
Lunch. Our guest speaker, Professor Jeanette Kennett, says: *"*Much
has been made in recent years of the place of friendship in modern
Western life. As people shy away from romantic commitment or cannot
find a romantic partner, friendship supposedly steps up to take its
   place.

"On the other hand, lovers are ideally supposed to be best friends.
So what, if anything, is common to our voluntary adult intimate
relations and how are these distinct from those personal
relationships we do not choose, for example with our parents and
siblings? How do we account for the creation and maintenance of
intimacy in love and friendship? The account I offer reveals how it
is that these relations may expose us to moral danger."

Come and hear Professor Kennett and make your views heard, and
continue the discussion after the lunch over coffee in the Dangar Room.

   Guests are also very welcome.

   Convenor: Sandra Darroch
