Fictionalism: a shopper’s guide.
In this paper I present a taxonomy of the different kinds of fictionalism.
A fictionalist finds it useful to utter sentences from some target
discourse, such as ethics or mathematics, even though she does not regard
these sentences as true. I suggest that there are four dimensions in which
fictionalist proposals can vary and from these dimensions I derive 12 kinds
of fictionalism. I then offer examples of philosophical theses (both
contemporary and historical) that seem to fall under each kind of
fictionalism. The benefit of this taxonomy is that fictionalism turns out
to be a diverse theoretical option with a more extensive historical
pedigree then is often realized. This is important because several critics
of fictionalism have misunderstood its fundamental features and the
diversity of approaches it encompasses.
