"A Dispositional Account of Ordinary Objects"

It is not uncommon to encounter dispositional accounts of concepts or properties. Mark Johnston, for instance, has defended a dispositional account of colour concepts, whilst David Lewis has defended a dispositional account of value. I begin by sketching Johnston and Lewis' dispositional accounts and examining what motivates them to endorse such accounts. I, then, examine the feasibility of endorsing a dispositional account of ordinary objects. What would such an account look like? What motivation is there for endorsing a dispositional account of ordinary objects? What are the costs of endorsing such an account? I suggest that the advantages outweigh the costs and, thus, that we should endorse a dispositional account of ordinary objects.
