Title: Dept Sem: Maria Kronfeldner
Title: "Explaining Creativity"
Abstract:
Creativity has often been declared, especially by philosophers, as the last frontier of science: it will forever defy explanation. The first part of the talk will show that this perspective rests on a central bug: wrongly identifying creativity with freedom. The second part of the talk explains why a prominent naturalistic approach to creativity, namely the Darwinian approach to creativity, fails in explaining creativity. The third part will present a more promising naturalistic road: the ordinary-process view, which totally breaks with the long philosophical tradition of regarding creativity as something extraordinary, i.e. unexplainable and attributable to geniuses, as Kant had it, but not to more mundane people.
