Mara Bollard: Psychopathy, Autism and Questions of Moral Agency.
ABSTRACT: In her paper 'Autism, Empathy and Moral Agency', Jeanette Kennett
claims that psychopaths are amoral, but autistic people are not. Since both
psychopaths and autistic people lack empathy, autistic people's preserved
moral sensibility must be attributable to their possession of a rational
capacity - what Kennett calls "receptiveness to reason" - that psychopaths
lack. Kennett concludes that "receptiveness to reason" is sufficient for
moral agency, thereby endorsing a Kantian rather than a Humean account of
moral agency. In my paper, I argue that Kennett's account (as it stands)
is untenable because it rests on a false premise: that psychopaths and
autistic people share a common lack of empathy. I claim that there is a
component of empathy called affective empathy that is lacking in
psychopaths but largely preserved in autistic people. I argue that
affective empathy is necessary for moral agency, insofar as it enables
agents to become “receptive to reason.” Thus, empathy comfortably retains a
place within a Kantian account of moral agency and becomes an important
part of the explanation as to why autistic people but not psychopaths are
capable of moral agency.
