Title: Matthew Slater
"Prospects for a Structural Monism concerning Biochemical Kinds"
Emma Tobin (2010) and I (2009) have independently suggested that
microstructuralist approaches to biochemical classification face
insuperable problems. Focusing on the case of proteins, William Goodwin
(2011) replied that we have overstated the case and that in fact a monistic
treatment that singles out the primary structure (amino-acid sequence) as
the "fundamental" level of protein classification. In my reply, I sharpen
my original arguments and identify more precisely what I find problematic
with classificatory monism in this domain. Goodwin's paper also raises
important questions concerning the relation between the conceptual issues
(monism/essentialism/&c.) and scientific practice which I hope to address
as well.
I've posted PDFs of Slater (2009), Tobin (2010), and Goodwin (2011) on my
website in case anyone is interested enough in taking a peak at these. But
of course, I won't presume any "pre-reading":
