PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE Dear HP JUHA SAATSI (LEEDS UNIVERSITY) Scientific Realism and Inferentially Veridical Representations Scientific realists think that appropriate kind of empirical success justifies belief in theoretical success: theories making novel predictions, for example, are arguably likely to be approximately right about the unobservable world. It is incumbent on such realists to give an account of how scientific theorising can `latch onto reality'—be approximately true, partially true, or partially veridical, in some sense—in a way that is explanatory of its empirical success. In addition to allowing for an explanation of empirical success such an account must be compatible with various kinds of inconsistencies in science. This paper takes some steps towards erecting a novel conceptual framework, based on properties and their inferential relation, providing a unified response to various kinds of inconsistencies in science.
