Title: Helen Stasa
Human vs animal euthanasia
In this paper, I will discuss the attitudes towards the euthanasia of human and non-human animals, focussing specifically on the differences between these attitudes. More precisely, I will explore whether it is consistent to hold that whilst euthanasia is permissible for non-human animals, it is not permissible (or, at least, is permissible in fewer circumstances) for human animals. That is, is there an intrinsic moral difference between euthanasia for non-human animals and euthanasia for human animals, which can be used to justify this position? In order to answer this question, I will examine in detail two euthanasia cases which would seem to be identical in all respects apart from species membership, arguing that it seems difficult to identify some morally relevant property or attribute which can be used to ground this distinction. I will conclude by arguing that in order to be consistent, we need to a) adopt a more lenient approach to human non-voluntary euthanasia or b) instead invest more efforts in the palliative care of non-human animals.
