Common to these views is the following thesis: the eligibility of a certain thing X to be the meaning of a given expressio n E is partly determined by features of X that are independent of E-users. Magnetism thus confers an external constraint on meaning. In this talk I ou tline a framework through which to think about the relationship between sem antic theories and metasemantic theories\, and the relationship between int ernal and external constraints. Using the framework\, I propose a condition to be met by metasemantic theories if any external constraint is to be pla usible. I then give reasons to think that the condition is not met by parti cular varieties of magnetism—varieties to which the notion of fundamentalit y (or its kin) is central.\nView your event at http://www.google.com/calend ar/event?action=VIEW&eid=cGFmMW9ya2JnYTdqYzRwc282c2c0Nm1nNzggc3lkcGhpbEBhcn RzLnVzeWQuZWR1LmF1&tok=NTIjMmJlcm9za3ZqcjJnMjRyam50cWxxZWdzNm9AZ3JvdXAuY2Fs ZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbWRiNjYwN2FkMWNmNjg4OTQ1MDNiMzEwYmZiMTA4YTcxNDY0M2RlMzg &ctz=Australia/Sydney&hl=en_GB.
