The vexing nature of conflicts of interest in surgery - the case of the ASR hip

While conflicts of interest in healthcare are widely acknowledged as
problematic, the particular role conflicts of interest play in surgery is not
well recognized or understood.
In this paper I use the recent case of the metal-on-metal ASR hip implant to
illustrate the kinds of conflicts that can arise with surgical innovations, the
types of harms that can be generated as a result, and the difficulties with
successfully addressing surgical conflicts of interest.
