Dear all,

The next USyd philosophy postgraduate colloquium will be held on
Monday September 8 @ 2pm in the Muniment room (Quadrangle building,
University of Sydney). We will have an afternoon tea straight after
the talk. All very welcome!!

Talk details:
Speaker: Dominic Dimech
Title: *Scepticism and Naturalism*

In this presentation I want to do two things: give a critical
examination of what scepticism is and then talk in detail about what
naturalism as response to scepticism is. My starting point for the
examination will be the common argument that if everything can be
doubted then scepticism can be doubted and therefore either scepticism
is false or it is self-refuting. I will be making reference largely to
Michael Frede's comments on scepticism here but I also want to flesh
out the consequences of replies to the common argument a little
further than what he does. I then want to turn my attention to the
status of natural beliefs, asking whether they are justified,
unjustified or possibly neither. I doing this I want to draw attention
to some meta-sceptical issues, specifically asking why we find
scepticism worrisome at all and what could ever constitute a
satisfactory response to scepticism.
