The Sydney Node of The ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1100 - 1800 presents: *THE ETHICS OF EMPATHY Symposium* www.historyofemotions.org.au/events/ethics-of-empathy KEYNOTE: Robert Sinnerbrink (Macquarie University) “Empathic Ethics: Phenomenology, Cognitivism, and Moving Images” SPEAKERS: Louise D’Arcens (University of Wollongong) Helen Day (University of Central Lancashire) Yasmin Haskell (The University of Western Australia) Fincina Hopgood (The University of Melbourne) Jay Johnston (The University of Sydney) Andrew Lynch (The University of Western Australia) Juanita Ruys (The University of Sydney) Carolyn Strange (Australian National University) Anik Waldow (The University of Sydney) Date: *Wednesday October 22*, 2014 9:00am-6:00pm Location: *Dixson Room, State Library of New South Wales,* Macquarie Street, Sydney FOCUS Empathy might seem a natural human emotion—but is it? Or does it have a history; is it culturally produced and regulated? Is it always positive or does it have a darker side? The speakers at this symposium explore the question of empathy from a range of disciplines— philosophy, religion, aesthetics, literature, film studies, history. They ask what role the creative arts have, and should have, in the production of empathy, how different historical cultures have viewed empathy, and whether empathy is simply a warm inner feeling or requires outward action to be effected. COST AND REGISTRATION Registration is free, however, as the event is catered, please email [email protected] to confirm your attendance by 8 October 2014. *ALL WELCOME! * For more information, including abstracts, visit www.historyofemotions.org.au/events/ethics-of-empathy -- Dr Robert Sinnerbrink Senior Lecturer Australian Research Council Future Fellow Department of Philosophy Level 7, W6A Building Macquarie University North Ryde, NSW 2109 Sydney, Australia T: +61 2 9850 9935 F: +61 2 9850 8892 E: [email protected] Staff Profile Page< http://www.mq.edu.au/about_us/faculties_and_departments/faculty_of_arts/department_of_philosophy/staff/robert_sinnerbrink/ > Academia Page <http://mq.academia.edu/RobertSinnerbrink> Amazon Page <https://www.amazon.com/author/robertsinnerbrink> Editorial Board, Film-Philosophy Journal< http://www.film-philosophy.com/index.php/f-p> Associate Editor, Film and Philosophy Journal Deputy Chair, Executive Committee, Australasian Society for Continental Philosophy <http://www.ascp.org.au/> CRICOS Provider Number 00002J Please consider the environment before printing this email.
