Hi everyone, This week's speaker in the University of Sydney Philosophy Seminar Series is Matthew Hammerton, (Singapore Management University)
The title of the talk is "Work, Leisure, and the Sources of Meaning in Life". Here is an abstract for the talk: I begin with the question ‘what is work?’ Many argue that ‘work’ is a hopelessly indeterminate term that cannot be adequately defined. Against this view, I develop and defend an account of what work is. Building on this, I then develop accounts of three other types of human activity that can be contrasted with work: leisure, self-development, and engaging in a relationship. With four main types of human activity defined, I then give an account of how each activity can be a source of meaning in life and fit this into a more general view about the sources of meaning in life. Finally, I connect this discussion to debates about the role that work should play in human lives. The seminar will take place at 3:30pm on Wednesday May 7 in Carslaw Lecture Theatre 273 (https://venueweb.sydney.edu.au/F07.02.273) Enquiries about the seminar series can be directed to [email protected] Ryan Cox Associate Lecturer in Philosophy Discipline of Philosophy School of Humanities University of Sydney [email protected]
