I have the same problem on my computer.

pear upgrade symfony/symfony
downloading symfony-1.0.0rc2.tgz ...

Could not chmod /usr/local/php5/lib/php/doc/symfony/.tmpLICENSE to  
644 chmod(): No such file or directory
ERROR: commit failed
