For one I had a project where there were multiple viable hosts for the same installation, which is why I introduced a host file to identify the host. However there is a bigger concern and that is that $_SERVER is "hackable". I never seem to remember which entries are and which are not hackable (did anyone ever write up a clear overview of this?). Actually I think that $_SERVER should be split up in those that are determined by if the item is user provided or not.
