I had a similar question.

Basically the manual shows what is possible, but lacks to explain the 
why's behind it. I agree with Christan and think the manual would 
benefit from some more explanations of the theories behind the 
approaches taken.

Another thing that I find missing from the manual is a sort of 'gentle' 
introduction into the world of database abstractions. A bit more info on 
the ActiveRecord approach etc would in my opinion make the manual easier 
to get into for those never having used this. Maybe an example with a 
diagram (visually) and completely creating this with Doctrine would be 
helpful? A sort of introduction tutorial into Doctrine showing beginners 
the possibilities and explaining the best practices?

ps: Comparing the older version of Doctrine and the newer version shows 
a lot of hard work has already been put into making it better. Thanks to 
all people working on this!
