It's also a problem serving non-text content such as PNG images.  The
attempt by the PHP output compressor to modify the data simply mangles
it. Compression should be turned of for media files served through
PHP.  Such files are likely to be compressed already (JPG, MP3 etc).

At the very least, it is necessary to be able to disable compression
in specific cases where the developer knows the content should not be
[further] compressed.
