Thanks for bringing this back up.  I've been a bit swamped the past  
week or two and haven't been able to give it more thought.

IMO, there are a few hurdles to getting this project moving:

  1. core-developer buy-in.  I haven't heard from any of the core  
developers whether or not they like or hate the idea
  2. set a target release.  probably 1.3, or 1.4
  3. figure out an api.  it will need to work with both propel and  
doctrine.

Thoughts?
