NOOOooo......... and it ends with a exit ? Stooooooop !
You set a content to your response, and stop rendering :
$this->getResponse()->setContent('<script>...</script>');
return sfView::NONE;

we don't use $response object in these case.
in the action we set $this->setLayout(false);
After that we use single echo('<script>...</script>') and flush()
We tested all modern browser, and it works...

And your hidden iframe echoes directly to the browser bypassing
$response presumably?

Hi!
We solve this problem with a "comet"-like behavior. (google it: comet
js iframe)
All long processes in our application done by a virtual form what
POSTs the form to a hidden iframe, what receives JS codes with state
updates.
So the user receives continuosly information about the script
workflow.
You can restart and stop the process anytime you want via manipulating
the iframe src attrib.
We developing this feature for just a few days, but we want to develop
it to a widely usable symfony plugin.
We just planning how symfony form errors get back to user if any,
etc...

Hi,
is there a way to output to the browser the progress of an action .
Something like :
public function slowAction(){
....
$this->createResponse("Step 1");
slowFunction1();
$this->createResponse("Step 2");
slowFunction2();
return ....
}
Regards,
Cristian
