Some of you might have seen my tweet about the idea of doing a meetup in Europe
and the US of about 20 people each. The idea is to really get the top people
together who are coding on Symfony2 core or are already knee deep in
development of applications and bundles. Its not for people who want to learn
about Symfony2 development.
The concept I came up with was to be a one day event giving everybody the
opportunity to present an issue that they currently see for about 3 mins,
people could ask questions for another 2 mins, but the idea is to get through
this quickly. This means that people should have their issue presentation
worked out before hand and published so that people can already review the
issue before. Groups of 3-5 people would then be formed to tackle the various
issues. The goal is to have patches (code and/or doc) implemented during the
day to address the issues. Alternatively define best practices (ideally with an
example added in the sandbox). The groups of people will probably change a few
times over the course of the day as I assume many issues will not require a
full day of work.
I was thinking of doing this in December. For Europe I still think this would
be the time frame to go by, however especially for the US its clear that its
quite non trivial to get people together physically and virtually just doesn't
have the same feel or productivity. Now it seems the best point in time to do
the US meet up is either a day before Zendcon (October 31st 2010) or around
Symfony Live SF (February 2011). February is a bit late, but October 31st is
kind of short notice. Looking at the line up of Zendcon however it looks like
Fabien, Dustin, Jon and Nils will be there already. I think Pablo will also be
there and 2 other people have said that they could make the trip just for the
meet up. So do we want to make this happen?
What is needed for the US meet up:
- someone to take over the organization since I will not be at Zendcon
- this someone should ensure that relevant people are invited
- that the day is well organized
- that there is a location for people to go to
- potentially arrange for a cheap way for people to spend a night in SF to keep
costs down
- people who are interested to join should speak up, if we get at least 10
people together I think its worthwhile doing this
- all of this needs to happen ASAP
I will continue to plan out a meeting in Europe in the first half of December
2010.
