I still think varnish sends a header to show it's there. That's how the Symfony reverse proxy handler decides if it should passthrough silently or actually do something afaik. Now the only thing that I would say makes sense is that we "send" a similar or the same header when the Symfony reverse proxy is in effect, then we can easily hide the toolbar from those master-subrequest.
