I always love message keys given my Java background.
The GNU-style (natural-text as source) was a cultural shock to me when
I jumped into PHP/Symfony development few years ago - and some debates
too with my developers, for most of the arguments you brought up - but
sadly, I allowed it to be implemented with natural text and now regretted.
If I have to cast a vote, use message keys. Else, it will bite you back
badly upon small changes.

We have talked about this topic numerous time and I don't see what has
changed since then.
We have talked about it, but we never examined all the advantages and
drawbacks of both approaches and discussed them with the community. I
want to hear voices and opinions of other developers. A lot of those
that I talked to in person would appreciate the above change.
