so on investigating the last person that ran into this, it was obviously a "user
error", but i will look into preventing it.
the person ran the vendor script from inside the bin dir and then manually
moved the vendor dir.
so i guess i need to add a check if the vendor.sh is run from root or not and
if not fail with a clear error message. hopefully that will reduce the number
of people hitting this issue.
