I did not use freeze and using unfreeze confirms this because it states:

'You can unfreeze only if you froze the symfony libraries before.'

Looking at the config of the application gives me:

<?php

// include project configuration
include(SF_ROOT_DIR.DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR.'config'.DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR.'config.php');

// symfony bootstraping
require_once($sf_symfony_lib_dir.'/util/sfCore.class.php');
sfCore::bootstrap($sf_symfony_lib_dir, $sf_symfony_data_dir);

Looking at the config of the project gives me:

<?php

// symfony directories
$sf_symfony_lib_dir  = '/opt/local/lib/php/symfony';
$sf_symfony_data_dir = '/opt/local/lib/php/data/symfony';

Any clues?
