Hi James, your issue comes with the circular references propel uses, which are not collectable by the php garbage collector, because PHP team is ignorant, saying that PHP is not designed for this *rant off* Propel 1.3 did improve this situation quite a lot. Before using Propel 1.3 via the plugin we had to increase to 512M for one batch import using the DB. After that we were able to reduce to 128M for the import.
Perhaps Propel 1.3 can help you out? Its not that painful as it looks on first glance to use.
