Personally, I think you'd be better off using LDAP or OpenID and using PHPBB with either of those, and creating an external authentication class for sfGuard that would authenticate against these for your sfGuard enabled applications. Realistically, these are the only 2 options for cross platform and/or cross application shared authentication.
