After playing around, it seems like I can do something like add a period "." to the end of the line, and then the linebreak is properly recognized. However, simply adding a space character doesn't do the trick.
It seems that if the line ends with a ?> tag, the line break is ignored. I'm not sure why this is the case. I don't really want to put a period at the end of each line though, so if anyone knows how to solve this, I'd greatly appreciate it!
