I absolutely agree, Lee. I think they are two different tools for two different porpouses, and it is the porpouse the original poster is seeking what is not clear enough for me. KPI are more at the BI side, while "reporting" -not quite it, but anyway the term used- as in Crystal is often used to generate not only reports per se, but contracts, invoices, and a welth of other templated business documents.
So, if the porpouse was to watch for business indicators and react in almost real time, sure: go for your solution, there is nothing trully relevant that Crystal or Jasper can bring for this. On the other side, if you just want to generate templated docs from the data available, that is what Crystal and Jasper are more often used for. Or KISS and generate plain PDFs from Symfony templates using the plugins available.
