Hello,
I think the PEAR channel was updated to use Pirum, see this announcement:
http://www.symfony-project.org/blog/2009/12/01/symfony-1-3-and-1-4-stable-released.
You probably have to update the channels:
pear channel-update pear.symfony-project.com
pear channel-update plugins.symfony-project.com
