What I use is VMware Server. It is free, fast, and runs the VM in the
background (it can be configured to start and stop with Windows).

By the way, somebody using Netbeans? In project properties, inside the
run configuration category, you can specify the index file for the
running function. As frontend_dev.php is inside the web directory, it
will not work when trying to run, because it will call something like
http://myproject/web/frontend_dev.php
Do you know some workaround for this? The thing I do is to create a
dummy frontend_dev.php in the root directory.
