Your problem is still with the encryption, I'm not sure php's mail() can handle that.
Why can't you upgrade to 1.3? I did that, and it was pretty easy. I did the 1.2-1.3 switch in about two hours, and now I have the full power of swift mailer, and I am using it with gmail's smtp.
