You should check that session files being created inside that directory when
you start the web app.
Usually these problems happen when one chooses alternative session storages
which
are not configured properly, the defaults should work without problems.
I use symfony on both Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 32 bit and did not experience
such problems.
