Here is a simple script, that reproduces the problem:
$ cat r.py
from sympy import *
from sympy.core.basic import StrPrinter
var("x")
spr = StrPrinter.doprint
e1 = [x**3, 1, x**4, x, x**2]
e2 = [1, x, x**2, x**3, x**4]
items = list(e1)
print items
items.sort( Basic.compare_pretty )
print items
