Thanks for the comments. The attached patch hopefully addresses points 1-5.
For point 3, I used the same tests as in test_lseries.py. That still has
var in it,
so should that be fixed too? The second attachment fixes this.
I didn't do anything about the last point since I guess it's a separate
problem and
should really be addressed in issue 1334.
