You can actually use it, you just can't use sympify. But I understand that it doesn't work for your app. Feel free to implement a pure Python preparser! For simple things you can use my attachment in comment 10, if you rather want something more complete you could start from scratch and use a nice and simple framework, see the link above. It won't get fixed soon unless someone picks it up, but I think it could be fixed without too much effort.
