Another reason for this patch is issue 1487. When the user-defined  
printmethod has to
call fcode (or something similar) to print arguments, there might be  
undesirable side
effects, e.g. line wrapping, comments, and so on. By directly calling
printer._print(...), this is no longer a problem.
