re symbols...I just used a find a replace to change most of them. There are some, especially those with assumptions, that remain. rebasing is finished, but I have an extra commit that tweaks the strip_whitespace (issue 1702) and fixes a bug that has now become visible in test_code_quality. If you want me to squash it all together I can do that. Right now, the last commit is 8cfa7c2 test_code_quality and strip_whitespace I also note that there are tests that fail for 2.4 that don't fail for 2.5 or 2.6...
