What you want is now kind achieved by separatevars():

In [16]: separatevars(a*(cos(x)+sin(x)) + b*(cos(x)+sin(x)), symbols=(x))
Out[16]: (a + b)⋅(cos(x) + sin(x))

Although I think Chris was telling me the other day that he wanted to see a  
function that would return something
more like (a + b)*cos(x) + (a + b)*sin(x) (or was that different Chris?).
