I think we should implement the switch manager style that Chris suggested a  
while ago here:

As for ask(expire, Q.real) == None, I think we should return re(expr) -  
im(expr)*I, because we don't know if
Im(expr) is 0 or not.

If no one comes up with a patch for this in the next few days, I will do it.
