OK, smichr's branch 1766 at github has patches for this issue and issue
1767 for review.
regarding comment 3: making assumptions "real, positive" is what is making
it work
right now...can't one just make all variables real and positive rather than
having a
flag that does that (even though it doesn't change the assumptions on the
variables)?
