Comment #48 on issue 1766 by smichr: expand(power_base=True) is too
aggressive

Vinzent, everything has been split up. I'm not sure how much commenting you
want on
everything or how close you want the tests to the place where the change was
introduced. I moved some of the tests but left many of them as the final
commits.
Aaron, that's true...the point I was making was that it was able to factor
that term
out...but that's not really in the scope of what separatevars is trying to
do so
perhaps that should go elsewhere. I'm not able to come up with an example
of an
expression that could be separated right now. And since this is not the
purpose of
separatevars, either, perhaps it should just be removed. I think the new
polys
handles factoring expressions like that.
I'll leave the Pow alone. But I see that powsimp used to be able to make
the reverse
transform, i.e. making it (x**2)**y. I'll see about getting powsimp to make
it into
(x**y)**2 since that will always be true whereas (x**2)**y will only be
true with
certain assumptions.
As to the rationale on the number extraction? I'm not sure...but that's how
it
behaved before and if I try to change that it opens up a whole new set of
wide
ranging failures.
I'm a little stuck at the moment with an intermittent failure in the
doctests. When I
run the whole suite a get the
separatevars((exp(2*x)-exp(2*y))/(exp(x)-exp(y))
example failing. But if I run only that module (i.e. doctest _simplify) it
passes.
I'm not sure what is going on.
