According to a comment in issue 440, the Symbol.__call__ shortcut is used to parse strings, like 'f(x) + 1'. If that is the case, then it should be fine. It is probably the cause of issue 1612, though.
2b4b7b18 implemented this behavior, by the way. I couldn't find an old issue for it.
