I understand the solution is a complex one, but I would say not so complex to justify >12h execution time. I can solve and simplify() this closely related (and slightly easier) problem (appended) in 26sec on the same box.

(On a side note, maybe my approach of always calling simplify() on the results should be reconsidered. I definitely agree that those results are not very human-readable, at least in that form. But sometimes the results are indeed very simple - which makes them more interesting for my application - but present themselves in complex form and for that to be spotted I can't see how to avoid calling simplify().)
