There's no reason that the doctester shouldn't be able to recognize that. If a line starts with (except for whitespace) ">>> ", then it's a doctest. It should then just compare the output with the result of executing what comes after the >>> (the output should have the same indentation as the
, but that shouldn't be too hard to check either).

This issue, along with issue 1947 and issue 2041, to me indicates that our doctest runner has some serious problems. I'm particularly disturbed by the doctest issues where the doctest isn't actually being tested. This was also the case back in issue 1641.

Does "python -m doctest file" catch the above error?
