I like this commit, it passes all tests and so fixes my problems with
current master.
Since subs() has been essentially rewritten, we should maybe have a look at
performance, but I do not really care. Correct is better than fast, I think
this is definetly an improvement over the current situation, so let's merge
this. (The new subs code is also more readable).
