I don't really agree with "One of the fundamental design decisions behind SymPy is that it should not have any external dependencies besides Python to install."
In most cases, it's better to use a proven solution than to try reinventing the wheel. So if there's an existing pure-Python library that solves one of our problems, we should use it instead of trying to reimplement half of it badly.
