I never thought it was uncommon in English, but I'm not a native speaker. Still, http://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=%22the+primitive+of%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 indicates that "the primitive of sin(x)" has a fair chance of being interpreted in the way I mentioned. Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a major source of confusion for speakers of French, and probably Italian, Spanish and several other languages.
