Why would we have to fork lib2to3.main()? Just write a wrapper around it
(that calls it) that automatically gives the sympy paths.
And I guess Frederik would have to comment on the stability. It's possible
that there were no problems upgrading this time simply because 0.17 didn't
change that much over 0.16, other than Python 3 compatibility. See

I would like to hear Ondrej's opinion on this, as he has much more
historical experience with this than I have. I don't even know the entire
history of why mpmath is bundled.
