Thanks for the feedback. As a workaround I will use integer limits.
The summation with non-integer limits is used regularly in every physics textbook that deals with spin variables, e.g. sum over -S to S with S either 1/2, 1, 3/2, etc. As Mathematica or Maple have no problems with this why should it be forbidden or not working nicely in Sympy?
